Ecologia has completed the installation and commissioning of a purpose designed and built multi phase extraction system inside railway arches beneath Connolly station in Dublin. The work has been commissioned by Irish Rail and has been carried out under the supervision Irish Rail’s consultant Golder Associates. The extraction system is required to address a legacy of free phase oils at the site and is due to operate for 3 years.
The project presented demanding logistical constraints with the majority of the equipment requiring assembly inside the arches after being brought in via a 1.5m wide access door. We were able to undertake drilling works, pipework insulation and surface preparation groundwork within the arches to a high standard whilst forced ventilation and rigorous health monitoring ensured a safe working environment in accordance with our ISO 18001 accredited management procedures.
The remediation system has been manufactured by Ecologia to be fully automated and telemetrically controlled so we are able to contact the equipment from our offices in Kent; allowing vital checks to be carried out remotely. This sort of capability is essential for reducing downtime and enabling preventative maintenance.
The remediation system is now fully operational and approximately 2,500 litres of free phase oils have been recovered in the initial 4 weeks of operation.
