Iain Cairns
BSc (Honours) MSc FGSRegional Manager / Senior Project Manager – Yorkshire and North
Iain graduated from the University of Northumbria in 2003 with a degree in Physical Geography and in 2005 went on to complete a master’s degree in Environmental Consultancy at Newcastle University.
His first consultancy role was at WYG for 2 years, undertaking and managing site investigations, monitoring and reporting on a number of former colliery sites across the northeast for residential developments.
Iain subsequently took a consultant role at Royal Haskoning for 4 years, undertaking contamination risk assessments on coastal and riverine sites, including a landfill in a tidal estuary, port developments and various river restoration schemes. During this period Iain led the site operations for the UK’s first low-flow groundwater sampling trials for the Environment Agency in a public supply aquifer in County Durham.
At a time of variable workload in the consultancy industry, Iain opted to take a Senior Consultant post in Environmental Claims Management for OHES, managing domestic heating oil spills and remediation, as well as managing major environmental incidents such as tanker rollovers and fire sites. Over 3 years Iain managed Yorkshire and Lincolnshire claims for OAMPS and Cunningham Lindsey (Sedgwick), developing strong Client relationships whilst meeting strict SLA.
On the strength of his ECM experience Iain later became Client Manager at MEL Environmental Solutions (after a short hiatus from ECM, during which he worked for a local ground investigation firm). As Client Manager, he reinforced his experience in managing relationships with insurers (Ageas / Tesco), Loss Adjusters (AED Loss Adjusting), and clients specialising in disaster recovery (Belfor). He was responsible for technical and financial review of reports and proposals, managing disputes, and meeting SLA whilst supporting colleagues on Crawford and Lloyds TSB escape of oil claims.
Iain went on to undertake freelance contracts after working for MEL and gained his OFTEC OFT600A ‘Installation of Oil Fuel Storage and Supply Systems’ qualification. During this period, he successfully worked for multiple Clients including consulting engineers, contracting firms and private customers.
Iain has recently joined Ecologia from Amey Consulting, where he was Principal Geo-environmental Engineer working on rail and highways projects. His work involved technical checks on outgoing reports, design of investigation works, analysis of contamination land assessment data, review of Third-Party work, data gap analysis and mentoring junior members of his team based around the UK.
Ian ‘s role as Ecologia Regional Manager is to expand Environmental Claims and contaminated land capabilities in the North of England.
