Microbial Survey at a Residential Property affected by Extensive Dampness – Kent

Ecologia was appointed by a local council to undertake a microbial survey following reports of extensive dampness in two rooms of a residential basement flat. Ecologia was required to establish the full extent of the microbial impact,
potential health risks to the occupants of the property as well as provide an assessment of applicable remedial options.

Source Excavation and Soil Vapour Extraction in The Chalk

Ecologia was contracted to assess and remediate a site where approximately 1500 litres of heating oil had leaked into the Chalk aquifer upgradient of a major public water supply abstraction.

The site presented a number of difficulties, being located on a steep gradient and immediately adjacent to a residential property. Groundwater was known to be at depth within fractured Chalk, but limited data was available about the hydrogeology.

Dual Phase Extraction & BioSparging – Hampshire

A loss of 2000 litres of heating oil occurred adjacent to a grade A chalk stream in Hampshire. The property is located on a chalk stream flood plain. The flint gravels underlying the site allowed the rapid migration of the oil to the chalk stream, which runs through the garden of the property.
Ecologia undertook a detailed survey to assess the spread of the contamination and to delineate the plume. The plume was found to have migrated beneath an engineered section of the river to the opposite side. Free product was also found to have migrated beneath a listed building which precluded excavation of the contaminants. A traditional dual phase extraction system would not be effective in the highly permeable gravels, so the development of an innovative technique was required.

M25 J12 and M3 J2 Ground Investigation

Ecologia was invited to tender and subsequently appointed to undertake the Ground Investigation Works for the M25 Junction 12 and M3 Junction 3 Westbound merge improvement scheme, on behalf of the Highway Agency.
The aim of the investigation was to determine the geo-environmental conditions of the motorway verge site in order to provide information for the design of the proposed widening works and assess the potential presence of soil contamination.

Investigation of Contamination and Ground Gases on a Former Colliery

Ecologia carried out a site investigation on behalf of a local authority under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act (1990) to assess potential contamination at a former colliery and landfill site. Residential houses were located on site with a village and groundwater pumping station adjacent to the site. Chalk hills designated as a site of outstanding natural beauty were also located adjacent to the west of the site. The site is located within a groundwater Source Protection Zone (SPZ I) and over a major chalk aquifer.

Phase 1 Desk Studies – Land Contamination Assessment

When planning applications are submitted to the Local Authority it is common practice for them to request, as a minimum, a Phase 1 Land Contamination Assessment (desktop study and site walkover survey) in accordance with DEFRA and the Environment Agency’s ‘Model Procedures for the Management of Land Contamination, CLR 11’.
