Pump & Treat – Castenaso, Italy
Ecologia applies the same level of engineering and design to its pump and treat systems that it does to other more complicated techniques such as In- Situ Radio Frequency Heating (ISRFH) of soils. The result is effective, robust equipment that requires little maintenance and is able to operate over the long periods of time often required by pump and treat systems. The contract was for a small scale pump and treat system to recover free phase oils and contaminated groundwater from a residential area in the town of Castenaso, Italy.
Air Sparging – Gloucestershire
Following a loss of a diesel from an above ground storage tank in Gloucestershire, Ecologia was initially contracted to remove free phase oils from the surface of the groundwater. This work was successfully undertaken by Ecologia but a significant residual concentration remained which was in excess of the agreed groundwater remedial targets.
In-Situ Radio Frequency Heating (ISRFH) – Manston, Kent.
Total UK appointed Ecologia to carry out a remediation assessment for In-Situ Radio Frequency Heating (ISRFH) at a former service station located in a groundwater vulnerable area (overlying a Chalk aquifer) in Manston, Kent. The contamination was mostly associated with Petroleum Hydrocarbons and confined within unsaturated Chalk strata, approximately 10 m below ground level (mbgl). For this site ISRFH electrodes were deployed in a triangular array between 3m and 6 m bgl together with eight multilevel SVE extraction wells. The site is typical of a decommissioned medium sized service station in an area with high groundwater vulnerability. The remediation was performed in six Stages in order to demonstrate the added benefits of coupling ISRFH to a traditional SVE system.
Pump & Treat – Yorkshire
Ecologia applies the same level of engineering and design to its pump and treat systems that it does to other more complicated techniques such as In- Situ Radio Frequency Heating (ISRFH) of soils. The result is effective, robust equipment that requires little maintenance and is able to operate over the long periods of time often required by pump and treat systems.
Ozone Sparging – Staffordshire
Ecologia has completed a project in Staffordshire to remediate petrol contamination to groundwater following a substantial loss from an underground storage tank (UST). The petrol contamination was found to have migrated beneath several domestic properties, leading to an indoor vapour inhalation risk pathway.
Multi-Phase Extraction – Northern Italy.
Ecologia was appointed to design, manufacture and install a Multi-Phase extraction system at a chemicals facility in Northern Italy. The remediation contracting was undertaken by Ecologia following investigation and overall design by various consultants.
Escape of Oil From Pulrose Power Station – Isle of Man
Approximately 50,000 litres of heavy fuel oil were lost during this oil spill, which coincided with a period of exceptionally heavy rain and flooding. Oil had impacted flooded land, culverts, the River Douglas and Douglas Harbour. A Joint Response Committee was established by the Isle of Man Government, including representatives from Ecologia
Environmental Solutions Ltd, The Department of Local Government and Environment, The Department of Agriculture, the Port Authority and the Department of Transport. Ecologia were appointed by insurers to advise the JRC and to assess the environmental liabilities.
Automated Ex-Situ Bioremediation – Verona Gasworks
Bioremediation is a technique with good sustainability credentials. Ex-situ bioremediation comes in several guises and the specific form of ex-situ bioremediation that Ecologia use is Biopiles. Biopiles are engineered piles of soil that include active aeration of the soil using a vacuum blower, collection of leachate and allow the abatement of VOC’s possible by
capturing the extracted gases. Biopiles operate very quietly with comparatively little operation and maintenance required.
Air Sparging – Norwich, Norfolk
Ecologia was contracted to remediate a residential property just outside Norwich after an attempted theft of domestic heating oil from an above ground oil storage tank. This resulted in approximately 1,900 litres of kerosene impacting the underlying soils and groundwater.
Risk-based Remediation at a Former Petrol Station in Surrey
Ecologia were appointed to perform a site investigation and to produce a Human Health and groundwater risk assessment for a proposed residential development at a former service station located in Woking, Surrey.
The presence of high levels of hydrocarbon contamination had been detected during a previous site investigation undertaken by another consultant. The property developer had purchased the site without a full understanding of the implications of developing a potentially contaminated site, and required urgent assistance from the main contractor, EDS Ltd, and Ecologia Ltd. Ecologia were contracted to better identify the extent of the contamination, to riaise with the regulatory bodies with respect to clean-up targets, and to propose a remediation plan.
